It emits a laser pulse of a specific wavelength and measures the time from the pulse being emitted to the time it is reflected back. Therefore, by measuring the flight time of the pulse, the distance can be calculated.

Currently, there are two main algorithmic approaches used in industry: pulsed time-of-flight (dTOF) and interphase time-of-flight (iTOF). Pulse-based time-of-flight (dTOF) directly measures the time-of-flight difference between the emission and reception of a light pulse to calculate distance. Its circuit implementation is relatively simple, with a high measurement frequency and an accuracy of approximately 2-3 mm.
